PROGRESS IN PLACE
My final project at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.
Progress in Place
The project features three pairs of shoes made from rocks and leather, using five selected rocks collected from northern Israel. It questions the symbolic function of shoes as tools for moving forward, encouraging reflection on progress, which often stems from inertia rather than intention. The shoes inspire introspection and focus on the next step.
I created three lasts inspired by the shape of toes grounded in the earth. The basalt rocks make walking difficult, prompting thoughts on the meaning of progress—whether it’s about walking or standing and pondering. The design contrasts the meticulously sculpted uppers with the rough leather soles, emphasizing their connection to the rocks. The local basalt stone symbolizes strength, durability, and a deep bond between man and earth.
Materials: Chrome Leather, Vegetable-tanned sole leather, Basalt stones. Working techniques: Traditional shoemaking, wet molding, chiseling.
